4 August 2011 Last updated at 17:52 GMT About 5,000 parents have received an email sent out by mistake telling them their child has failed to get a place at secondary school in September.
Northamptonshire County Council said anyone receiving an email dated 4 August 2011 should ignore it.
A council spokesman apologised for any inconvenience and said the information parents had received in March about school allocation remained the same.
He said they were trying to contact parents via email about the error.
The spokesman said: "While carrying out work to test the school admissions site, an email was accidentally triggered."
'Began to panic'Information correcting the error has also been placed on the front page of the county council's website.
One parent, Alan Lewis from Burton Latimer, near Kettering, has an 11-year-old son who is going to secondary school in September.
Mr Lewis said: "I had this email and initially thought that this is a wind up.
"But then I began to panic and thought have we done something wrong?
"Thankfully it was an error because my wife is getting his new school uniform tomorrow."
In June 2010 the county council was involved in another email blunder.
A fake email about a consultation into pubs providing free beer was mistakenly sent out.
